Thursday: The Importance of the Arts—Project from Great American Artists for Kids

I promised I would post our first project we completed from the book Great American Artsits for Kids by MaryAnn Kohl and Kim Solga so here it is!

We chose an artist from the seciont Early American Art named Mary Cassat who loved to paint pictures of mothers with their children. The girls enjoyed listening to the whole biography of the artist and looking at the other children’s Monoprints that were in the book.

Breakfast in Bed by Mary Cassatt

We created a Fingerpaint Monoprint by following the directions in the Young Child Box on the page.

All the supplies we needed were some tempera paint, liquid starch, cookie sheet, paper and cute little fingers belonging to some excited little girls.

I mixed the liquid starch with some powered tempura paint.

We fingerpainted away, boy was it fun!

Then we pressed down the sheet of paper, pulled it up and wala! A Monoprint!

Abby enjoyed telling everyone that day that she had “Mono Painted” and our masterpeices are hanging on our art wall for everyone to see.

She is one of my favorite artists. Seeing Mary Cassatt\’s work always reminds me of how special children are.

I love the mono-print painting project you have shown that highlights Cassatt for kids. As the author of “Discovering Great Artists”, I’m very impressed with your blog and your philosophy. Thank you!
