What are your tips for those days when you cannot manage to do much in terms of entertaining your children?
Monday was a day like this, just drove through the night, all 3 of us sick, for a couple days I was just completely burnt out. I always find it hard to entertain my kids on days like this, good thing they don’t happen to often.
We spent a lot of time reading, lying on the floor playing with toys and…gulp…watching TV. It’s hard when they are to young to really entertain themselves at all.
How do you cope?

Simple toys, toilet paper rolls.. Heck, I have even gotten an entire box of tissues, and showed my daughter how to pull them out one at a time.
That is at least 30 minutes of bliss. They pull them all out, play in them, and you can rest a little.
Now, if you can find a use for those tissues, later, it wouldn’t be a waste of resources!
The above comment about the tissues made me laugh!
It seems like I too have been having one of those days, I mean weeks! This past week I’ve been so burnt out. I really think it’s the lack of sleep that I’ve just never been able to catch up on since my son was born.
Surprisingly if I can’t get any sleep like a nap, taking him out for a walk works great. He gets really quiet in the stroller and the exercise actually revives me a little, even if I do look like the walking dead out on the street. As for if he’s sick or I’m sick, that hasn’t happened yet but I imagine that I might resort to the dreaded TV too, even though we don’t let him watch it. Survive any way you can!
a trip to the library to pick out a few new books and movies is always good here.

I recently discovered two really cool ideas that have been saving my can on “burn out” days –
1 – Split up your toys into several bins and rotate them every few weeks. That way, just as they are getting bored with one set, you can pull out another set and voila! All new toys!
2 – Put together a “quiet time” box with books on CD, flash-cards, easy craft projects and play-alone games. I use this every few days for my oldest, who has recently given up napping (much to my dismay!) but it’s handy any time I need a few minutes of sanity!
I totally agree with the quiet time. My son always complains about it but I hear him making up his own stories as he plays with his toys. Another activity that keeps my kids entertained for awhile is my daughter’s tea set. They love to “bake.” I, too, have been using the TV a lot the past few weeks…it is just so easy to get rest that way! One final idea is inviting a neighbor over who has children. It creates a mess but the children keep each other entertained while I can debrief with a friend!
