Boy was I in trouble if I did not send my Grandmother a thank you note for gifts or special outings she would take me on or give me. She instilled in me the importance of staying in touch with family, remembering birthdays and handwriting thank you notes. She now lives with my parents and is suffering from severe dementia and Alzheimer’s. But when she receives a card in the mail she reads it over and over and carries it with her everywhere. Even with how sick she is she still has this feeling of how someone took the time to hand write her a letter and it brings her joy.
Now I have my girls actually since they were born (I would have them kiss the card with some chap stick before they could start scribbling) help me write Thank You notes and Birthday Cards to loved ones. Hopefully I can teach them the importance of hand written letters that seems to be fading fast with younger teens, adults and children.
