Chocolate Chip Cookie War

July 25th, 2011 in family, recipes

I promised I would share with you the… dun dun dun…Chocolate Chip Cookie War we had while in California.

My husband Tyler tells everyone he makes the best chocolate chip cookies. And HE does. They are better than any bakery cookies I have tried and better than any other cookies that have been brought to our house. But it’s a recipe that he just starting using a couple of months ago. I would like to place the blame for my still chubby post-baby body on him finding that recipe.

Now listen. His little brother was talking smack at our house, telling Tyler that his cookies were NOT, in fact, the best and that our sister in law Cindy’s cookies were the very best.

So when we went to visit, it was W-A-R. Time to settle this once and for all. You are getting lucky because you are receiving TWO killer chocolate chip cookie recipes in this post.

Tension started to rise when Tyler asked his sous-chef (that’s me) to prepare his ingredients. There were no fresh eggs from our chickens! No high quality vanilla! No raw sugar! Could he still pull it off? He was quite worried. I made the call to go with semi-sweet chocolate chips, which was a heart wrenching decision, but one that proved to be essential in the end.

Tyler’s Dough:

Oh yes, you are seeing it right. You use a measuring cup to measure out the dough. These are LARGE cookies.

Now…Cindy’s Dough:

We were starting to worry because Cindy pulled out my KRYPTONITE: Guittard milk chocolate chips…how did she know? How did she know I hide these in my house to munch on? They were *IN* her cookies…dun dun dun.

Cindy and Tyler put the cookies in the oven (I promised to not take pictures because everyone was in their bathing suits, although I am pretty sure this one does not count)…and we got busy making a very official voting box:

Out they came!

Tyler’s Cookies:

Cindy’s Cookies:

The votes were cast but THEN Cindy did something terribly tricky. She put WALNUTS IN HER SECOND BATCH! Oh, she knew the grandparents and women would be won over by her walnuts.

The Results: 8 for Tyler, 6 for Cindy and 5 Too Nice or Worried to Vote. I guess we will never know. Although, that little brother that was talking smack? He quietly whispered to me…

“Ok Tyler’s are better.” I also was threatening to hit him with a wooden spoon SO…it might have been because of that as well.

Tyler’s Chocolate Chip Recipe can be found here: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/best-big-fat-chewy-chocolate-chip-cookie/detail.aspx (he uses a bit less chocolate chips than it calls for and we like using semi-sweet chocolate chips. And of course with fresh eggs, nice vanilla and raw sugar it takes these cookies to the NEXT level)

And here is Cindy’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe (it makes a lot!):

1 1/2 c. shortening

1/2 c. (1 cube) margarine

2 c. brown sugar

2 c. white sugar

5 eggs

2 tsp. vanilla

7 c. flour  (her husband says 6 1/2 makes them better, so try both)

1 Tbs. baking soda

1 Tbs. salt

2 pkgs. of your favorite choc. chips

2 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Mix the first 6 ingredients in a very large bowl.  In another bowl, mix the next 3 ingredients, (flour, baking soda and salt.)  Then pour the dry into the very large bowl and mix well all together.  Add chocolate chips and nuts.

Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes.  I almost always have to go the full 10 minutes.

There you go. So basically I am telling you it’s ok to make two batches of chocolate chip cookies this week. We can all gain a chub-a- love together!
