Chapter Books, Here We Come

June 8th, 2009 in Tuesday: Weekly Book Review

Why does my 3 1/2-year-old think she needs to read chapter books?

It might be because for all of her cousin’s birthdays we buy them each a book, and since many of them are older we buy chapter books.

It could be the fact that she really has been reading since she was brand new. As an itty bitty she would sit and let me read her Dr. Suess books, which can be quite long. I guess she is already at the next level of reading!

Whatever the reason, I don’t mind; it gives us even more time to be together. I climb in her bunk bed along with baby girl, who usually plays with the stuffed animals while we lie down at bedtime, and read chapter books for a good hour or so.

Her first chapter books were:

Charlette’s Web

The Mouse and the Motorcycle

Ivy & Bean

I have really been enjoying moving to chapter books because I am looking forward to reading some of my favorites as a girl. It got me asking my husband what his favorite chapter books were and here is what we came up with:

  • The Baby-sitter’s Club (this is Tyler’s pick; he read these…I don’t know why I find that so hilarious)
  • Nancy Drew
  • Goosebumps
  • The Hardy Boys
  • The Ramona series
  • The Boy Detective
  • Louisa May Alcott books
  • Hatchet
  • The Witches

What chapter books are your children’s favorites? What chapter books did you love growing up?

My 9 year old just graduated from funloving easy-read chapter books like Katy Kazoo. I think the Biscuit dog series introduced her to chapter books. She also enjoyed a series from the 50\’s/60\’s?? that I loved as a kid: Billy and Blaze (his horse). So many choices…just go with what each child seems to be interested in. Thanks so much for the reminder to keep kids reading over the summer!

I’m so glad to see that my son is not the only one. During “turn the tv off week” I discovered that my child wanted to read Mommy’s book instead of his own. To my surprise he sat still every night to let me read Narnia. Mind you, this book has NO picture. It was awesome. Thank you for sharing your experience. I look forward to chapter books.

I don’t really remember what I loved when I was young- I read so many books. But I love any Roald Dahl book. I think The Twits was my favorite. And I do remember I devoured Baby Sitter’s Club books too. Oh yes. And I loved Louis Sachar. Wayside School is Falling Down. Now I’m starting to remember!

Oh! I LOVED the Babysitter\’s Club series!! I also started reading the Anne of Green Gables books, but didn\’t make it past the 3rd one (I think it was). And when I was younger, it was anything Amelia Badelia (not sure on the spelling).

My four year old son really enjoyed Winnie the Pooh and House at Pooh Corner. He also likes the Nate the Great books.

I think it’s wonderful that your girls will listen to a story for an hour (and one without pictures too)! How long have you been doing that?

I loved the Ramona series when I was a little girl too. I also enjoyed the Orphan Train Adventures series and Sweet Valley Twins.

When I was younger, I loved to read Nancy Drew, The Baby-Sitter’s Club, The Boxcar Children, Encyclopedia Brown, the Ramona books and Judy Blume’s books about Peter and his little brother, Fudge. I think I might check some out from the library!
